Film star style crush: Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash

At the moment, I am reading Johnny Cash’s fantastic autobiography, and am enjoying being taken on the journey of his very colourful life.  A lot of that colour was provided by his wife of 35 years, folk and country singer June.  Both Carter and Cash were brought to life on the big screen with fantastic performances by Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix in the film Walk The Line, and part of what made the film so visually stunning was the idiosyncratic attention to detail of wardrobe designer Arianne Phillips.  Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter, and for me her performance was only enhanced by her immaculate styling throughout the movie.

As spring approaches, I’m pretty sure that a dress a bit like this one above is on most girls fashion wish-list.  The March edition of Glamour magazine landed on my doormat earlier today, and 50s diner-chic is well and truly back.  Prom-styles, full-skirts and nostalgic prints are super-versatile and ultra-feminine and certainly have me dreaming of longer, warmer days already.

Yes, it’s another floral appearance, but aside from the striking graphic print, another factor contributing to Ms Witherspoon’s style goddess status is her hair and make-up throughout the film.  She looks so fresh-faced and understated throughout the film; definitely the kind of look that I am always aiming for in everyday life and usually failing spectacularly at.  And the hair.  Wow, the hair.  First off, it’s commendable how a trademark blonde like Reese pulls of such a rich brunette – proof that a leopard might be able to change her spots after all?  And then the styling: side parting with loose pin curls, perfectly bouffant beehives…  I’m not even going to try and conceal my jealousy here.

Finally, before you accuse me of getting too far ahead of myself and thinking about trends for spring and summer, here is Ms Witherspoon showing us the way with the coat.  Double-breasted, checked and statement collars – a quick browse of asos demonstrates far better than I could that all these trends are still strong right now, and there are some serious bargains to be had in the last of the sales too!  (No need to thank me for the tip.)

  1. Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Cheers

  2. Nah. We’ll just take the ckokbooos that she has stolen recipes from and let her sign those.
